Markstone ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our Markstone application ("App") available on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.
The short version: We don't collect, store, or transmit your personal data. Your files stay on your device.
Information We Don't Collect
Markstone is designed with privacy as a core principle. We do not collect, store, or transmit:
- Personal identification information (name, email, address)
- Your markdown files or document contents
- File names or folder structures
- Usage analytics or behavior tracking
- Device identifiers for tracking purposes
- Location data
- Contact information
Local Data Storage
All data created and used by Markstone is stored locally on your device:
- Your Documents: Markdown files you view and edit remain in their original locations on your device's file system.
- App Preferences: Settings like pinned folders, color preferences, and display options are stored locally using Apple's standard UserDefaults and do not leave your device.
- Project Data: Information about your projects and folder organization is stored locally using SwiftData.
File Access
Markstone requests permission to access folders on your device solely for the purpose of reading and displaying markdown files. This access is:
- Granted through Apple's standard file picker
- Limited to folders you explicitly select
- Managed using Apple's security-scoped bookmarks
- Revocable at any time through your device settings
Third-Party Services
Markstone does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services. We do not share any data with third parties because we don't collect any data in the first place.
In-App Purchases
Markstone offers in-app purchases (Pro subscription and Lifetime license) through Apple's App Store. These transactions are:
- Processed entirely by Apple
- Subject to Apple's privacy policy
- Not accessible to us beyond anonymous aggregate statistics provided by App Store Connect
We do not receive your payment information, Apple ID, or any personal details from these transactions.
iCloud Sync
If you choose to store markdown files in iCloud Drive, those files are synced according to Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy. Markstone itself does not implement any cloud syncing functionality.
Children's Privacy
Markstone does not knowingly collect any information from children under 13 years of age. The App does not require any personal information to function.
Data Security
Since all data remains on your device, the security of your files depends on your device's security settings. We recommend:
- Using a strong device passcode
- Enabling Face ID or Touch ID
- Keeping your device software up to date
- Using encrypted backups
Your Rights
Because we don't collect personal data, there is no personal data for us to:
- Provide access to
- Correct or update
- Delete
- Export
Your markdown files and app settings are entirely under your control on your device.
